Every night when I sat down to work on my book on Jeremiah Hacker, I'd call, "Hacker time!" That was the cue for Joe-Joe, our extremely cuddly chihuahua, to come running. Not big enough to leap into my lap, he'd need a hand up. He'd sit curled in my lap the whole evening.
The book has been out for almost a year now, but dogs have excellent memories. We got a second chihuahua, equally as cuddly, and Joe-Joe taught her by example that "Hacker time!" means lap time. Now they both come running.
Many writers have rituals. Mine involves dogs. There is no better inspiration than warm dogs in your lap. Whatever I'm writing about, it's Hacker time.
